(My apologies for the bad sound quality. The battery for my mic died that day and it was not possible to get a replacement up here in the mountains)

Next week part two: Masha about how it is to go back from an athlete life to a “normal” life again. And some advice for boarders.

V-Day

I decided to change this week’s topic, it will not be about Japanese cuisine or about snowboarding. Actually I’ve been kind of surprised by Valentines day. Why? It’s completely different in Japan! Here the man is not supposed to give a present, but to receive one; either by an admirer, girlfriend, wife, or a female working colleagues of lower hierarchy. Usually the gift is chocolate (actually it almost always is chocolate). The chocolate someone receives from someone whom they are in love or a relationship with, is always very special and very expensive. On the other hand, the chocolates male bosses receive from their employees are simply sincere and casual.

Really? Japanese women are supposed to do all the giving? But here is the rub: exactly one month later is white day, which is the valentines day for females in Japan. The boyfriends and husbands are supposed to treat their beloved, but not only with chocolate. The ladies can choose chocolates, flowers or other creative gifts. Weird hm? But somehow I like it :)

The most beautiful manhole I’ve ever seen

Something that will surely catch peoples attention within their first travelling days through Japan are the wonderfully designed manholes here. Below you’ll find a small selection. On my coming up bicycle trip through Japan this gallery will surely get extended.

Here some links for further photos:

I’m not sure about the content of next week’s post. Either a video with more snowboarding or one about Japanese Food. Let’s simply see what it will be :)

Karaokaydokay

My colleagues are so kind and this time treat me to a Karaoke evening. Instead of arranging this in an unspectacular way in our hotel we hit the road to a branch of a company chain specialized in Karaoke-entertainment. Comparable with multiplex cinemas one finds several rooms which are only thought for Karaoke. Every room is equipped with a cosy couch with a coffee table, a Karaoke-system of course and a telephone to order drinks or little snacks.

Karaoke is deeply ingrained with the Japanese entertainment culture. ‘Kara’ means ’empty’ and ‘oke’ is an abreviation for the word ‘orchestra’. When Daisuke Inoue (*May 10th 1940, Osaka) rented out the first self-made Karaoke systems to bars in Kobe he probably had no clue about with what a stunning success his invention not only in Japan but somewhat later all over the world would be blessed. His cassette tapes were so popular that they were also produced by entertainment industry companies. Daisuke Inoue did not protect his invention with any patent and thus earns practically nothing on the world wide Karaoke business. With the break through of the DVD – at the latest – and thanks to the distribution by video game consoles Karaoke celebrated it’s world wide success since the ‘singles’ of the 21st century. Sony’s ‘Singstar’ for Playstation was sold over 12 million times alone in the PAL-region (almost whole Europe and Australia except for France though SECAM).

No brain cells

No brain cells

In Japan it’s not mainly about if or how good somebody can sing when performing karaoke. You don’t laugh about the singer but with him. If somebody doesn’t strike the right note everybody helps at the same point of the second strophe. You don’t laugh at somebody neither make someone down it’s about the common fun and about standing together. Even if one can’t sing at all she or he won’t be excluded or asked not to sing again in this round. Admittedly it needs getting used to but it is very commendable from a social point of view and it testifies to a mentality from which many should cut a slice off.

Well then, have fun singing!

Next post will be a photo post about the most bizarre or cutest signs I found in Japan so far!

aMANZAing Grace

Well, well… It seems the grace won’t stop. The Japanese a capella group Takarabune from Kobe interviewed and performing “amazing Grace” – the favourite song of all Manza onsen hotel employees. To find out why this is our favourite song and everybody loves it here you don’t even have to work here but only stay for one night and you will know why… Sorry but sometimes even a blog needs inside jokes.

Merry Christmas!

The last Christmas holiday and then it will already be over again :( I hope everybody enjoyed the time and had a nice Christmas.

So I will start updating the blog this week. Since this is quite a lot of work it might take one or two weeks. Following will be improved:

The page will receive an index.

Posts will be extended by more useful links for tourists, people who also want to do working holiday in Japan or for those who are simply interested in Japan and its culture.

Also older entries will be enhanced by photos and – depending on how much time I will have for it – also by some films. Of course it will also be listed in the latest entry under which post you will find the new media.

PS:

Some enhancements have already been made.

  • 25th week: the pictures of the added photo gallery received subtitles and descriptions.
  • Break in style: photos of Moscow have been added. (Subtitles and descriptions will follow)
  • 16th week: photos of the Tokyo Gameshow have been added.
  • 12th week: photos from the Fuji San hiking tour have been added.
